Nivard's work will be exhibited at Central Station in Amsterdam as a part of the 'Edits' project, with artwork created for the exhibition for Mika Rottenberg at 'De Appel - Arts Centre.

Edits is a temporary exhibition at Central Station, where designers take inspiration from the museums of Amsterdam. "Approximately 260,000 travelers pass through the Central Station of Amsterdam on a daily basis. Now imagine this; your artwork on display at one of the busiest locations in the city… It becomes reality for 8 talented designers during the exhibition Edits. For one year their work will be displayed around the Central Station. All designers took inspiration from the museums of Amsterdam while creating their work for Edits.

A selection of self-initiated artwork by Nivard will be exhibited at the Anti-Design Festival in London!

"Positioning itself as an alternative to the London Design Festival, the Anti-Design Festival comes to east London on 18 September. Initiated by internationally renowned graphic designer Neville Brody, it's aim is to promote work that challenges perceived stereotypes of contemporary design. The festival's raison d'être is the support of work that is "uncommercial, dangerous and anti-establishment". Selected artwork will be displayed in a group show alongside pieces by designers and artists including Jonathan Barnbrook, Stuart Semple and Stefan Sagmeister."

The Anti-Design Festival will take place in and around Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, east London during 18-26 September.

Nivard's new typeface 'High Fibre Cadavre' features in November edition (#174) of acclaimed French graphic design magazine 'ÉTAPES'.

The article focuses on new typeface 'High Fibre' as well as the incorporated Dingbat-series originally designed for the City Hall in Alkmaar. 'Highfibre' Family is an extravagant display typeface with a black-letter bloodline. The family is based upon a gothic lettering model with influences from various contradicting style periods. By incorporating class cross-pollination it's stylistic origin gets slightly blurred and breaks with typographic conventions.

"Fibres Typographiques"

En coopération avec THNL Architectes, le graphiste Nivard Thoes contribue à la rénovation de l'hôtel de ville d'Alkmaar, ville des Pays-Bas. La tonalité dégagée à travers la famille typographique Highfibre Polygon et la série de motifs recouvrant le tapis de la chambre des conseils réactualise l'histoire du lieu et trouve son équilibre entre épure des formes contemporaines et graphies élaborées du Moyen Âge. L'alphabet, et ses multiples versions, emprunte à la diversité stylistique des blackletter et introduit la forme polygonale, pont graphique entre le trace anguleux de la gothique et une géométrie moderne. Nivard Thoes a travaille à partir du manuscrit de la charte communale, écrit au XIVe siècle, dont les 62 "commandements" sont destinés à êtres inscrits en Highfibre Polygon sur le murs du bâtiment rénové.

IF PRINT IS DEAD, WHAT ARE WE ALL STILL DOING HERE? FPO is dedicated to both the visual stimulus and the detailing of the development and production of printed matter. Armin Vit of US based UnderConsideration reports on the Nakajima Monograph:

"This front-to-back, back-to-front monograph for Japanese designer Hideki Nakajima is a behemoth in both size and production values. I can't even imagine what the process it must have taken to bind 1,400-plus pages and what's even greater is that it still achieves a sense of softness and delicacy that in perfect-bound or Smythe sewn form would have probably looked like a boring encyclopedia. Designer Nivard Thoes explains: "The bilingual book is divided into ten categories and can be read from back to front and vice versa — the book has no front or back. One side of the book is provided with a hardcover, The other cover is formed by ten separate semi-transparent layers." By looking at just the images you don't get to see the transparent pages right away, but once it's pointed out the effect is subtle. Nice to see a collaboration between two designers (Nakajima and Thoes) work out so well."

'The Rotten Tail Project' will be exhibited at the 'HongKong Design Centre' (InnoCentre) during the 2008 'HongKong Business of Design Week' (BoDW), as a part of the alumni delegation of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.

"DesignEX '08 is a major part of BODW 2008, the annual flagship event for the creative sector in Hong Kong organised by the Hongkong Design Centre, with the Netherlands as this year's partner country. BoDW's Dutch paviljon highlights Dutch design, fashion and architecture. The rock star line-up of Dutch speakers includes Marcel Wanders, Winy Maas, Marlies Dekkers, Irma Boom, Hella Jongerius and Rem Koolhaas. Lars Harmsen and Flo Gaertner from the German typography webblog and magazine, 'Slanted' are currently preparing a book for daab publishing entitled, GRAPHIC DESIGN INSPIRATIONS, which will be published in October 2008. Throughout its 700 pages, it will be presenting the works of more than 300 designers from around the world.

Opening Ceremony of the counsil room for the city of Alkmaar. After an historical ceremony (including cherry champagne) the Major of Alkmaar officially inaugurated the renovation of 'de Raadzaal'. Immediately after the ceremony the space was consecrated by a kinkoff congregation of the city counsil.
