DREBBEL / Experimental Opera

* Selected for the 20th International Poster and Graphic Design Festival of Chaumont - France, 2009. (Festival International de l'Affiche et du Graphisme de Chaumont)

'Drebbel' is an experimental open-air opera dedicated to the world famous inventor Cornelis Drebbel [1572-1633] portrayed by Dutch singer-songwriter Thé Lau (the Scene).

The poster portrays a strained Drebbel (including Renaissance moustache), semi-submerged below the surface of water, on the point of nearly drowning. Visually referring to essential themes of the opera; water, submarines, oxygen. Subtly referring to the essential theme of the libretto dealing with the questioning of Drebbel's credibility; is he really a genius inventor or just a skill-full copycat?

Composer: Kees Wieringa. Libretto: Flip Broekman (with contributions by Thé Lau). Director: Andreas Tiedemann.

Book Design for the accompanying publication for the 'Drebbel Project' published by 'Nachtwerk Foundation, including the libretto, interviews with cast & crew and historical essays on Cornelis Drebbel.

The handicraft paperback edition was printed in two colours, plus as a final touch, treated with several custom-made stamps placed on the cover and inside pages. The spine of the book was highlighted by using red colour thread and an open-back binding technique. Additionally, a handmade dust jacket of felt was made for the limited edition of the publication.
